Marble Mountains

Slowly, slowly, slowwwwwwwwwly scanning all of my instant film from the past few years (years?! ugh, I'm so far behind) and I wanted to upload all of the film I took in Vietnam. These photos were actually taken on my first trip there in May 2014. We spent an afternoon at Marble Mountains, which has incredible views once you hike all the way to the top. But man, what a hike! It was a struggle to get to the top; most of the climb was in direct sunlight in 100+ degrees, but definitely still worth it.

Thoughts on Painting

Sometimes the hardest part of the creative process is actually starting. In college, one of my professors made us turn in 10 drawings every week. When I first heard that was going to be a requirement of the class, I was kind of freaked out. I mean, 10 drawings a week for 10 weeks is 100 drawings! That seemed like a lot, especially on top of all of my other work. But honestly, it became one of my favorite parts of the week. The drawings didn't have to be perfect or finished masterpieces, but it forced me to sit down and paint and not worry about all the details. Sometimes, even years later, especially when I find myself in a creative rut, I give myself the assignment to create 10 drawings in a day, or a week, and just let go.

A trip to SAM

There's nothing I love more than a trip to look at art and find inspiration. I went to Seattle Art Museum a few months ago and I'm still enjoying the pictures I took while I was there. I fell in love with a room full of paintings by Australian aboriginal artists. Their paintings are full of movement, color, and interesting brush strokes. And of course I had to see some of my favorite abstract expressionism artists, like Helen Frankenthaler and Frank Stella.

1.Wolfeboro IV -- Frank Stella
2.Buzzards Bay -- Helen Frankenthaler
3.Anooralya (Wild Yam Dreaming) -- Emily Kam Kngwarray
4.The Yellow X -- Al Held
5.Piltati Tjukurrpa -- Eileen Yaritja Stevens

Mukilteo Beach Film

Life has been busy and I haven't updated in forever, obviously, but I finally got around to scanning some of my instax photos from the summer. And I will be [attempting] to [slowly] upload them all here. These were from a late summer sunset at Mukilteo beach. I love how the golden light from the sunset was reflecting and dancing across the dark surface of the water.

Paradise

Looks kind of like tropical paradise on a cloudy afternoon? How about these palms are actually growing in an abandoned parking lot in Lynnwood, off of Highway 99, if you can believe that. Such great juxtaposition and a reminder that beauty really is everywhere if you look for it!

Roche Harbor

Even though most of the day the island was covered in a giant blanket of fog, in typical pacific northwest style, it cleared up enough to enjoy a gorgeous sunset over the harbor. Such incredible reflections on the water, I especially loved the orange and blue rippling together. Perfect use of complementary colors in nature (not to mention my very favorite combination of complementary colors) and perfect end to the day.

San Juan Island Film

On a crisp foggy morning, that felt more like October than late July, we hopped on a ferry and wove our way through the mist and sea to San Juan Island. It wasn't the most ideal weather for whale watching (and unfortunately we didn't spot any), but man, those beaches draped in fog and warm gray light were something else.

1. Cattle Point, San Juan Island
2. Madrona tree, Lime Kilm Point
3. Ferry wake shortly after leaving Anacortes
4. Another view at Cattle Point

Golden

One of my favorite times of day; golden hour -- although more like golden moments, those fleeting seconds of the most perfect light you could ever imagine. Those ordinary, mundane moments in life that completely take your breath away. There is beauty everywhere; you just have to take the time to see it and appreciate it.

Instant Film from Arizona

So I might be one of the worst procrastinators in the world, but I finally got around to scanning some of the instant film I took on my road trip to Arizona in May. It's definitely not the greatest quality, especially the last two pictures which got a little beat up -- oops! But that's part of its charm, right?!

The first three pictures were taken on the University of Arizona campus & the last two are from Gates Pass, just outside Tucson. It's an incredible view to watch the sunset and I love the silhouettes of the saguaro on the hills.
